Can They Really Ask That? Can You Say No?
It's not just the government who is gathering information but private companies and even individuals are collecting information about all of us at a startling rate. It is information that is highly personal and should be irrelevant to the business that we are trying to conduct with them.
When we go to a store and buy something and write a check for the purchase, we understand why they ask for your driver's license and if the address is correct. If the check should bounce, they need to know where to find me to make it good. But even if we pay cash for a purchase, why do they have to ask me for my home phone number? To avoid having to give that information and hopefully to avoid calls at home, you can always respond with "It's Unlisted"! If they ask for your cell phone number, you could respond "I don't own a cell phone!"
Have you ever noticed that the cable company, phone company, power company, etc. all ask for your social security number in order to do business with you. They say they need that information in order to provide a credit check and to extend credit for their services. Unfortunately, this number is the most valuable piece of information for identity thieves!
In order to use many of today's online services or even to just view some websites, you have to fill out a registration form. Information such as home phone number, date of birth, and a lot of other details that you may not be comfortable giving out. But some of the sites want to make sure they are not dealing with minors. Why not ask if you are over a particular age limit that they want to set instead?
As a result of many sites asking for your information and all of the warnings given to us about identity theft, people give out a lot of misinformation. If you give false information online, you may be putting yourself at risk of being charged with breaking the law. Everyone remembers the highly publicized case of a mother filling out a false MySpace profile to engage in cyberbullying that resulted in a young girl committing suicide. The mother was charged with obtaining unauthorized access to MySpace to create a fake profile. Ironically, law enforcement agencies themselves often set up false profiles to spy on suspects through the social networking sites.

How To Stop A Computer Headache
There is something that a lot of us have never heard of called a 'Refresh Rate'. A slow refresh rate makes the screen flicker like a florescent light and gives many people headaches. Even though this is now common knowledge among hardware vendors, for some reason, the default on most computers is still set to a slow refresh rate. The controls to change this setting are well hidden but if you follow these easy steps, you can change them yourself.
|
Click on the Start menu and choose Control Panel
|
Click on the Display icon --> Click Settings Tab --> Click Advanced button
|
Click on Monitor tab --> Click on the down arrow to view the Screen Refresh Rates
|
Select the highest refresh rate --> Click Apply --> Click OK |

Things You May Not Know About TOP
Many of our customers may not be aware that Total Order Plus has a 'User Appendix' manual, 'Online Help' manual and a 'TOP Intro" manual online on our support website www.mindwarecorp.com and can be accessed by clicking on 'Documentation' on the left side of the screen. These manuals contain numerous screens and instructions to help you with Windows issues, UnForm, UPS, Anzio Lite, Unix commands, End of Day and End of Month processing, how to use the TOP Report Writer, TOP menu commands, 'How To' reverse cash receipts payments, etc.
In this newsletter, we are publishing some of the 'TOP2000.q Features'. The TOP Report Writer is located on each module's report menu. You can choose to create a report or create a file from the TOP ODBC Data Base that can be imported into an Excel spreadsheet.
Files in each module are displayed for selection. Once the file is selected, you can select a range of data or you can filter the output by any field within a file. You have options to filter the data by fields that are 'equal', 'greater than', 'greater than or equal to', 'less than', 'less than or equal to' and 'not equal to'. You can select a range or filter option or both, as well as select to print to a printer or export to a file. As each field is selected for the report, the print positions for each column displays on your screen. For complete details on how to use the TOP Report Writer, go to www.mindwarecorp.com and click on Documentation. Select the User Appendix and refer to pages 77 through 80.
Once a file is created you can import the file into an Excel spreadsheet. Below is a screen print of what the imported data will looks like:

You can view the entire feature list on our support website www.mindwarecorp.com and Click on TOP Features.
