Export Inventory Items to Excel
Many of our customers are not aware that you can export inventory items to a file which is formatted for Excel, import items into Excel, change cost and price, and import items back into TOP when you are ready to activate the price changes.
You can export all inventory items or select a range of items. You can choose to export all item types or select to export only items that are counted in inventory. You can select to include items that are kit items and items that are used for pricing only. To leave the item type field blank ensures all items will be exported.
There is a new option in the export utility. You can select what pricing fields in the item master you want to be able to change in Excel. Option 1 will export the list price field, option 2 will export the average cost field and option 3 will export price and cost.
The name of the file will display on your screen as ITEM_PRICE_FILE.TXT but will let you override the name. You will find the file in the EXPORT folder.

Once you have updated all of your pricing, you can run the TOP Import Item Price File utility. The Excel file must be placed in the IMPORT folder. You will use the same file name as you did in the export program. All of the items in inventory will be updated with the price changes.

Research has said that the technology industry accounts for 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, which matches the same percentage of emissions from the aviation industry! With so many people using a personal computer, there is no doubt it has a major impact. We all need to start thinking about green computing if you want to help fight global warming or just plain want to save money on energy.
This is the last monthly article for 'Green Computing'.TIP:
Dispose of old technology properly. Never dispose of any electronic device by just throwing it away, the amount of toxic waste in all electronics is substantial.Check with your city officials for names of local charities, schools, churches or recycling programs that will let you donate your equipment or will recycle your electronics properly. Identity theft through electronic means has become such a focus of cyber-criminals that disposing of your old computer without taking steps to 'scrub' the data could be very risky. Find a secure deletion software program to erase your data and don't depend on the Windows delete option to remove files. All the delete options does is to free up space on the hard drive where as a deletion software package will actually fill the free space with random characters.
There are technical options that will allow you to decide what you are most comfortable doing. You can erase all personal data files off your hard drive(s), completely wipe off all data on the hard drive and actually remove the hard drive from the PC before you donate or recycle, or you could take the hard drive to a computer repair facility and ask them to eradicate the data on the drive for you and then dispose of it properly.

Things You May Not Know About TOP
Many of our customers may not be aware that Total Order Plus has a 'User Appendix' manual online on our support website www.mindwarecorp.com and can be accessed by clicking on 'Documentation' on the left side of the screen. This manual contains numerous screens and instructions to help you with Windows issues, UnForm, UPS, Anzio Lite, Unix commands, End of Day and End of Month processing and how to use the TOP Report Writer.
In this month's newsletter, we are publishing the instructions for 'How to Cancel a Unix Print Job':
To list all of the system printer information, you must enter the following commands:
Login: root
Password: xxxxxx (ask system supervisor)
# lpstat -t
lpstat lists each system printer and print server and spooler print request number for each print job to be cancelled. It may also list any disabled print servers.
#lpstat -t |more
If you have multiple printers on your system, it may take more than one page to display the information. You will need to add the |more to display a page at a time.
Once you have determined the print job to cancel, enter the following command:
# cancel printer_name-1234 (i.e. cancel hp7410-xxxx)
The system will display a prompt telling you the print job has been cancelled.
To enable a print server, enter the following command:
# enable print_server_name (i.e. enable ps02)
To return to the login prompt, issue this command:
# exit
