Is Technology Making America Fat?

The latest statistics show that over 16% of adolescents and children in the United States are obese based on body mass ( BMI) and over 30% of adults are obese. This represents the largest increase in the past twenty years! Why are Americans gaining all of this weight? One theory is that we may not be eating more or eating more of the wrong foods but the big problem is that we're getting much less exercise. Our children are less active than we were as kids and we are less active than our parents were. One has to come to the conclusion that technology has something to do with it.

How many of us spend most of our time sitting in front of a computer all day? But it's not just our jobs that are to blame. Leisure activities today seem to put much more emphasis on the leisure rather than the activity. Sitting on the couch or lying on the couch each evening watching TV doesn't do much for our health. Food commercials entice you to head to the kitchen for a 'little' snack, media centers and home theaters and lifelike HD technology keeps you on that couch each night and you may end up with fewer years to enjoy it.

We probably remember our Mom having to hang clothes out in the sun to dry and getting the health benefits of lifting, carrying, bending and standing. Today it is far easier just to throw those wet clothes in the dryer. The same thing happens with dishwashers, microwave ovens, garage door openers and all other gadgets that do for us what we used to expend physical energy doing. There are even robotic vacuum cleaners that don't need your help. The man of the house doesn't even have to push a lawn mower anymore. He can just sit atop of a riding mower and let it do all of the work.

As for the kids, they are video game whizzes and many of them never get outside to run and play. In today's world, parents may be afraid to let their children walk to school or ride their bikes around the neighborhood in fear of being abducted. So the kids stay inside and watch TV, play games or update their MySpace page and may end up exposed to far more danger online than they would ever run into in their subdivision. So they stay inside and chat and surf the web, rack up points on their favorite game sites, while munching on chips or pizza.

Can technology also help to solve this problem? One of the best selling games in the game industry is the Nintendo Wii and the best selling point is player interaction. The Wii takes advantage of technology that can detect movement in three dimensions, allowing players to actually get up and move rather than using a hand held device. The biggest audience for this game turned out to be senior citizens. They can play tennis, golf, bowl, box, play baseball, etc. in the safety of their own homes and not even have to pay green fees or club memberships!

You can also use technology by taking advantage of software that will help you count calories, fat, carbohydrates and protein in your meals. You can type 'diet software' in a search engine online and you will get hundreds of results with this information.  This summer plan on swimming in your pool rather than soaking up the sun, take more walks, park your car further back in the parking lot and take the stairs more often than the elevator. Let's make those New Year's resolutions come true.

Crafts and Hobby Association Winter Convention

The Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) held its winter convention and trade show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, January 24-28, 2009.  It was the largest exhibition of its kind in the world. From an international product selection to unrivaled educational and networking events, the 2009 show brought the craft world together to showcase breaking industry trends, the latest product introductions and countless new ideas for 'going green'.

It was not just another trade show... it was the craft and hobby world's fair. There were over 900 exhibiters, over 16,000 attendees, 7,000 buyers and 60 countries represented at the show. The events included scrap booking, paper crafts, general crafts, art material and framing, fabric, quilting, needle crafts, imaging and license and design. There were international pavilions from Japan, Brazil, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, France, Taiwan and India.

Mindware customers that exhibited at this year's show were Art Gone Wild & Friends, Hampton Art, Product Performers and JustRite Stampers.

Monthly Tips for 'Green Computing'

Research has said that the technology industry accounts for 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, which matches the same percentage of emissions from the aviation industry! With so many people using a personal computer, there is no doubt it has a major impact. We all need to start thinking about green computing if you want to help fight global warming or just plain want to save money on energy. Each month we will provide a tip that will allow you to help.

TIP: Keep it digital! The popularity of digital music downloads has reduced the number of CDs manufactured by the music industry. Using an iPod or MP3 players instead of burning a CD reduces waste.

Instead of using a fax machine, scan a document so it can be e-mailed. Businesses can setup a fax server instead of a traditional fax machine so all incoming faxes are digitized automatically to save paper. Instead of printing out a photo to send to someone, use one of the online photo sharing services.

Mindware has an interface in TOP with MailCall that allows you to email orders, quotes, invoices, purchase orders and statements instead of printing a hardcopy or faxing a copy to customers. Saves a lot of trees and saves a lot of money not having to purchase custom forms.

If you think about it in today's world, the digital options are endless.

Things You May Not Know About TOP

Many of our customers may not be aware that Total Order Plus has a 'User Appendix' manual online on our support website www.mindwarecorp.com and can be accessed by clicking on 'Documentation' on the left side of the screen. This manual contains numerous screens and instructions to help you with Windows issues, UnForm, UPS, Anzio Lite, Unix commands, End of Day and End of Month processing and how to use the TOP Report Writer.

In this month's newsletter, we are publishing the instructions for 'How to Shutdown a Unix Server':

Prior to issuing the shutdown command, you must determine if all users have exited back to the SCO login prompt. Just because a workstation has been turned off, it doesn't necessarily mean that they have logged off properly. To start the system shutdown, enter the following commands:

Login: root
Password: xxxxxx (ask system supervisor)
# who
The system should only display one user being logged in and that should be root. You can re-enter the who command until you see that everyone has logged off properly.

When you are ready to continue, issue this command:
# shutdown -g0 -y   (0=zero minutes before shutdown)
Shutdown automatically executes the sync and haltsys command and can allow 0 to 15 minutes before the shutdown takes place, allowing users to complete the work they are doing prior to issuing the shutdown command.

The shutdown is complete when you see this prompt:
** Safe To Power Off **
** Press Any Key to Re-Boot **

Press the Enter key ----> Type CTRL+D keys to proceed with normal startup ---->
Press the Enter key at the system date and time display.
The system will automatically return each workstation to their SCO login prompt.
ALT+CTRL+F1 keys to return to the normal SCO Unix login prompt on the server console.

Note: If the system is shutdown incorrectly or loses power while users have data files open, there is a probability of damage being done to records within any given file, causing corrupt file integrity. You must either run a restore procedure from a backup processed before the shutdown or run file rebuild programs to try and correct the errors.

The 'Tech Line'

                      By Joanne Simmons

Question:

Customer's have requested that their credit card number not print on orders or invoices. Can you make a change for that?

Answer:

Total Order Plus gives you the option whether or not you want to print the credit card number on the order or on the invoice, print on both or not to print at all. If you select to print the number on either form, you have one further option to print the number in mask format showing only the last four digits (i.e.  ##########9999).

Note: This is a feature in the Terms Code Maintenance on the O/E Options Menu.
