W2 and Tax Changes for 2008

It is that time again! Time to worry about the new tax limits and W2 forms. For the first time in years, the Federal Government has changed the format of the W2 print. Thankfully, it is not a major change. For customers using TOP Payroll and laser forms, you will need to make the following changes on the Year-End Processing menu in the W-2 Formatter:

Pension 15 48

Social Security # 01 21

The Social Security limit has been increased to $102.000.00 and Medicare limit remains unchanged. The new Annual Tax Tables for single and married will be in your Circular E that you get from the Federal Government as well as the Annual Dependent Allowance.

For customers printing to a dot matrix for W2 forms, will use the following:

Pension 18 48

Social Security # 04 21

New Mindware Mailing List

Mindware Corporation has had customers request a way to communicate with other users in order to share information about how they are using TOP for different reasons or what features they use to better server their business needs. This information can now be shared with other Mindware Marking Device customers and will help benefit others who may not be aware of the many TOP features and upgrades.

A mailing list for TOP Marking Device users has been established for this purpose and you can post to this list by sending your email to mdlist@mindwarecorp.com. Each month you will receive an email with your login information and password. If you want to change your password or unsubscribe from the list you can send your request to Mdlist-request@mindwarecorp.com with the word HELP in the subject or in the body of the email.

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your mindwarecorp.com mailing list password once every month, although you can disable this if you prefer. It will also include instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your account options. There is a button on your options page that will email your current password to you if you need a reminder.

The Dangers of File Sharing

In light of the recent $220,000 judgment of a Minnesota woman for using a music sharing program, the dangers continue to grow for those that continue to use such file sharing programs. There is now a legal precedent for the music and movie industry to come after Internet users who are engaging in that type of activity.

The company Napster is credited with starting the peer-to-peer file sharing process and was taken to court to settle judgments against them, but is now a legitimate service. But there are still many users out there that thinks it is ok to download copyrighted material. It has always been illegal to share such movies, music and software.

Another problem with downloading shared material is that the software usually comes with spyware and adware and can damage your computer with viruses, worms and other malicious software. They can cause your computer and the Internet to run slower.

You should begin to check your desktop for unused icons and remove any that you are not familiar with. Click on the Start button and select All Programs and view the programs for items that you did not install. You can remove any of them by using the Add/Remove program section in Control Panel. If you find any of the P2P file sharing software installed on your PC, you need to run a scan on your computer for viruses, adware and spyware.

Once your feel like your computer is clean, make sure your employees or household members understand the legal, financial and infected computer consequences of using these kinds of programs.

Last Chance for UnForm 7.0 Promotional Pricing

Some of our customers are still on non-supported versions of UnForm - versions 4.X and 5.X. As of December 31, 2007, version 6.X will no longer be supported. Now is the time to take advantage of the special fourth quarter pricing from SDSI to upgrade to the newly released UnForm 7.0.

Below are the upgrade prices being offered by SDSI for the fourth quarter of 2007:

• v7.0 Laser forms only upgrade from v5.0 – 65% of new retail price.
(Example: 3 print job license Retail $1595.00 x 65% = $1036.75 upgrade retail price)
• v7.0 Laser forms only upgrade from v4.x and older – 75% of new retail price.
(Example: 3 print job license Retail $1595.00 x 75% = $1196.25 upgrade retail price)

Current normal upgrade pricing from UnForm 6.0 to UnForm 7.0 for a 3 print job license is $797.50 - 50% of the retail price.

SDSI is now charging $125.00 for non-supported versions of UnForm to reset the license for the purpose of re-installing on another computer or for a one-time incident fee.

UnForm Version 4 has not been available for download since 12/31/05 and Version 5 will no longer be available for download after 12/31/07. Mindware Corporation does not support products that are not supported by the manufacturer.

Things You May Not Know About TOP

Total Order Plus has a utility program that allows you to change pricing on customers with contract pricing records. Prior to this utility, you could run a utility program to change the items in inventory by a percentage but it didn't change the contract prices at the same time. The program is on the UM Options Menu.

You will have an option to select one customer or a range of customers as well as a range of inventory items. You can enter the percentage you want to increase the list price with an option to round the amount to the nearest cent, dollar or no rounding at all.

Question:

Our General Ledger Summary of Postings is out of balance for the month of October. How do I start to find out where the out of balance condition happened?

Total Order Plus has a report on the General Ledger Report Menu that will list each day of a given month and will print a message to tell you what day is out of balance. The report is Monthly Transactions by Day Report.

Once you find out what day is out of balance, you will need to look at the Daily Summary of Postings to find out what transaction code to use for correction and make a journal entry to balance the month.
